Information for visitors to Australia wishing to be married in Australia
First you must satisfy the same legal requirements as required from an Australian citizen intending to get married, that is:- * you are not lawfully married to some other person
* you are not within a prohibited relationship
* you are over 18 years of age
* or any other circumstance.
You must produce a certified copy of your birth certificate with an official translation to English (if necessary) or your passport. It is not necessary to be an Australian citizen to marry in Australia. There is no requirement for you to reside in Australia for any prescribed time before the marriage takes place. If you have been previously married, it will be necessary to produce a copy of your divorce decree. If in a language other than English, this also should be accompanied by an official translation. Steps to be taken:
Notice of Intended Marriage (click to download, Acrobat Reader required) should be produced to the Celebrant at least one month and one day prior to the date of the marriage. These forms are also available at the Embassy and Consulate nearest you. Your signatures on the "Notice of Intended Marriage" should be witnessed by an Australian consulate official who should apply a stamp identifying their position. The Notice of Intended Marriage will remain current for 18 months once lodged with me. Follow up by me:
When I receive the Notice of Intended Marriage, I will forward to you, by post or email, copies of ceremonies I offer for you to look over and make any changes or addition you wish to personalize the ceremony. I will also forward to you, by post, a brochure outlining the range of services I offer and a Schedule of Fees. I will then produce your personal wedding ceremony for you and forward a copy to by you for your approval. When you arrive in Australia: Contact me to arrange a suitable time for an appointment. When we meet we will go over the choices you have made with regard to the ceremony and finalise the documentation. It will be necessary for you to bring the original birth certificates (together with the official translations, if applicable) and if you have been previously married an original divorce decree (with official translation, if required). It is important that you bring these documents to Australia with you. |
